It Is Time to Return to Algeria
For "Empresa Exterior", our editor analyses Minister Albares’ visit to Algiers and the consolidation of normalised bilateral relations.
“Algeria is a neighbouring country, a strategic partner and a friend of Spain, with whom we share strong common interests. First and foremost, stability in the Mediterranean and trade that is growing exponentially every year: last year, in 2025, we tripled our exports compared with the previous year – which was itself a year of significant growth – and this represents our best export performance since 2019. It is also, of course, in the current context, a leading and reliable supplier of gas, and we have – and this is the most important thing – growing human and cultural ties, as evidenced by the presence of the Cervantes Institute in that country and the interest in our language.”
This is how Minister José Manuel Albares described relations with the Maghreb country when announcing his two-day trip to the Algerian capital, where he was received by President Abdelmajid Tebboune and held a working meeting with his counterpart, Ahmed Attaf, and the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, formalising the restoration of full bilateral relations between the two countries.
